My Approach

If you are new to counselling, the therapy jargon may seem confusing or intimidating. Don't worry, I am happy to explain what each approach entails and answer any questions you may have! A complimentary 15 minute consultation phone call is always an option. 

 

You will find that I am casual in my approach and this is something that many of my clients appreciate.  Therapy can initially feel intimidating but every effort will be made to reduce discomfort and make you feel as though I am someone you can connect with. Growth is more likely to occur when individuals are provided with respect, care, genuineness, empathy and positive regard; all of which I strive to provide. Of course, if you decide that my approach is not a suitable fit, I am happy to provide alternative options for you to explore.

I view counselling as a process that assists individuals seeking to improve or remedy aspects of their lives. Through counselling, there is the opportunity for personal development, enhanced awareness and self-acceptance.  Supporting clients to become aware and make productive use of their emotions is another component of this work.  Furthermore, counselling allows for the cultivation of overall wellness within a person's life.

In my practice, I utilize a therapeutic approach that is deeply rooted in humanistic and emotion focused modalities.  Where appropriate, I intentionally integrate aspects of Narrative Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Solution-Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).  Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills are also introduced to clients when applicable.

Every person's change process is different so progress will look different for each person.  This process does not have a standard or rigid structure, as the client is active in determining the experience they would like to have during therapy.  I believe in utilizing a flexible approach based on the client's wants, needs, and characteristics.

I consider it an honour to create a space for individuals to access, and experience profound healing and a deeper connection with self and others. We all need to have our stories received with empathy and understanding so that wellness can be cultivated.
