Reproductive Mental Health

Many individuals, couples and family members are unaware of the challenges that can arise during childbearing years.  Within our society, there is a prominent belief that creating a family is a magical experience associated with bliss and positivity.  Although aspects of this my be true for some, it is not an experience shared by all.  The excitement of starting a family can be thwarted by difficulty conceiving, perhaps even uncovering health challenges that prevent this from ever becoming a reality.  For others, the pregnancy or delivery journey results in physical or emotional challenges.  Grief and loss are also a significant component of the reproductive mental health realm.  The experience of miscarriage, perinatal loss and infant death may require therapeutic support by a specialized counsellor.

Reproductive Mental Health

Emotional and mental health concerns can arise at any stage of the reproductive cycle.  The emotional layers can be difficult to navigate for oneself and their family.  Counselling has shown to be effective for depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts and other mood disorders during the perinatal and/or postpartum periods.

Birth Trauma

Labor and delivery may not have been what was expected.  What was anticipated to be a joyous event may have resulted in a negative childbirth experience.  Traumatic stress disorders, depression, altered world views and other psychological difficulties are some of the outcomes that result following birth trauma.  Birth trauma is equally as important as other traumas and counselling can support recovery through the healing process.

Fertility

Difficulties with conception is impactful for individuals and couples.  The fertility journey can feel overwhelming, stressful and confusing.  Supporting your emotional well-being is my primary focus.  In counselling, we may discuss concerns and emotions, reactions, expectations about treatment, and develop coping strategies so that you feel comfortable during this period of your life.

Reproductive Mental Health Counsellors are often employed in either private practice or as employees of the local health authority.  In many instances the focus is typically placed on the woman, however the partner or family may be equally as impacted, thus requiring services as well.

If you are reading this because you are impacted by any of the aforementioned concerns, you may also be enduring the difficulty of feeling as though no one understands.  This can intensify the difficult emotions already present. I recognize that reproductive mental health difficulties are unique to each person.  For this reason, I desire to work collaboratively with my clients to tailor the treatment plan and approach as necessary.

I am certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International. To attain this designation, extensive coursework and knowledge is required.  In addition, I hold additional training certificates from the Seleni Institute of New York in Perinatal Loss & Grief, as well as Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders.
